So, you’re expecting a child-congrats! Whether it’s your first or fifth, you want only what’s best for them. Luckily, Washington is a great place to raise a family. With great communities, schools and activities, it’s hard to go wrong. But, accordingly to a study done by Nerd Wallet, these are the best cities for young families in the Puget Sound.
Rankings were based off:
Public school excellence
Growth and prosperity
Known for a growing area of wineries and craft breweries, Woodinville offers a small town feel just 30 minutes outside of Seattle.
The area’s education is great too, receiving perfect scores according to GreatSchools.org. With a newly remodeled Woodinville high school and consistently top sports teams, the city continues to evolve into an amazing community for young families.
Issaquah, also known as the “trailhead city” has been rapidly growing, especially for young families.
The community of more than 33,000 is located right off the Interstate 90 corridor, just 16 miles east of Seattle.
It’s surrounded by gorgeous scenery, trailheads, and those who like to remain active.
Issaquah’s schools are healthy as well. For the past decade, the Issaquah school district has consistently ranked among the top five in Washington on state assessments.
Located on the northern part of Lake Washington, Kenmore is truly a hidden gem. Just minutes to the Eastside or Seattle, you’ll have no trouble getting around.
Backed by family-friendly neighborhoods, an award-winning school district, nearby services, and outdoor activities- Kenmore is a great place to raise a family.
Home to Microsoft, Redmond boasts a thriving place to work, great schools, and is conveniently located less than 15 miles to downtown Seattle.
During the weekends, take your kids to Redmond Town Center for family friendly events, or King County’s most popular park, Marymoor, to explore all 640 acres of recreational activities, rare amenities, and culturally-enriching events.
Sammamish, just outside of Redmond and Bellevue, is nestled on the shores and hilly terrain just east of Lake Sammamish.
Quoted directly from their site, “The Vision of Sammamish is a community of families. A blend of small-town atmosphere with a suburban character, the city also enjoys a unique core of urban lifestyles and conveniences. It is characterized by quality neighborhoods, vibrant natural features, and outstanding recreational opportunities.”
Located about 40 minutes south of Seattle, Covington offers affordable housing with spectacular views of Mount Rainier. The city is a hub for several shopping areas and a recreation center you can take your kids to on the weekends.
2. Maple Valley
One of the fastest growing market areas in Washington State, Maple Valley is centered around nature and offers a community driven neighborhood.
With an excellent record for keeping residents and visitors safe, you have a less than one in 1,000 chance of falling victim to a violent crime in this natural playground.
To no surprise, this is number one. Located in the heart of the cascades, yet only 25 miles from Seattle, Snoqualmie has everything a young family could ask for.
Per census data, 35% of Snoqualmie’s population is under 18 years of age, the highest youth-to-adult ratio in King County. With this, the city is highly supportive of school district initiatives, new and expanded parks facilities, and youth programs.
