Where are you at in your parenting journey?
Nadine: Recently, we have noticed that our parenting journey has arrived at a new station- the baby phase of parenting is over. Our youngest has turned five and we have completed preschool. Potty training is done, rocking to bed or in the middle of the night is over, and chasing an ever in-danger toddler has come to an end. As you always hear parents say- it is indeed bitter sweet! We will miss it so much but are also ready for the next phase in parenting. Adventures, camping trips, sharing our favorite childhood books and movies, and much more is in store for us now!
What’s the best piece of parenting advice you’ve received?
Nadine: Lets be honest, most of the “advice” we get from people is junk we have already heard, things we already know or have tried, or things that we think are little crazy. BUT, in the mix of the bad advice, if you keep listening, you will get some awesome advice. Some of the tidbits I remember the most are really simple:
Do what works for you and each baby
Deep breaths and positive thoughts
Its okay to ask for an accept help
Find a community for support- parenting really takes a VILLAGE!
What are your MUST HAVE kid products or services?
Nadine: Oh gosh, I have had so many favorite things over the last few years, from my Baby Bjorn and Moby Wrap to the Diono car seat with the straps that never get tangled! But I think one of my absolute favorite is the Playland service at Fred Meyer! That’s right! It was my saving grace! One hour of free childcare that my children loved (with CeCe) while I shopped in peace. One time I just got a Starbucks drink and sat there!

What’s your funniest parenting moment?
Nadine: We laugh all the time as parents- at ourselves, at our kids, and at the moments that once seemed horrible that we can now laugh about. There was the “Great Poo Disaster of 2011” when Moo smeared poo all over her crib and the walls when we thought she was just sweetly waking up from a nap. Or the time Matt realized that Nate was too big for the front pack and his feet hit at just the wrong spot – Ok- maybe that was funnier for me to watch then for Matt! But our kids bring us joy and laughter all the time. If you are really open to listening and engaging with them, they will give you gold!
What's your vision for Savvy Family and Baby Bump Expos?
Nadine: My biggest hope for Savvy Family and Baby Bump is that it would be an awesome resource and support for families in our region. We launched these events wishing that we had had opportunities like it when we were pregnant and just starting our parenting journey. Our culture has moved away from the “village” approach and we think it is time to reconnect with one another and learn how to be the best parents we can be together.
How do you balance working from home with children?
Nadine: Uh… well… balance is a tricky thing!! Some weeks I feel like I am super mom, making it all happen and then other times I am on the verge of a breakdown. Some practical tips to keep balance would be to minimize TV, take the time to plan out meals on Sunday before the week gets going, and find ways to share loads with others. Carpools, dinners with friends, and getting the kids to help out all keep things going. And sometimes working from home means slower productivity with a toddler in your arms at your desk and puzzle pieces scattered under your work chair which you feel the need to pick up rather than work. But in the end, I have cherished the opportunity to be with my kiddos and still do what I love!
Mom & Wife, Director of Events
Over a cup (or two) of wine, Nadine and friend Heidi discussed the South Sound region’s need for quality events that focus on families and support parents while bringing about a sense of community–thus the Baby Bump Expo was birthed in 2014 and the following year, the Savvy Family Expo!
